The initial request to enlarge the kitchen in our client’s heritage listed homestead, happily grew to a review and restoration of all existing spaces. We suggested pushing the existing bathroom into an underutilised room that was buried in a less desirable part of the house; therefore enlarging the kitchen sufficiently to include a traditional country kitchen table. The original dining room is now an inviting sitting room to enjoy ...views of the paddock. Focus turned toward other improvements, such as significant repairs to the roof and an inherently flawed box gutter design above the main hallway, allowing the original much higher late-1800s ceiling in the hall to be restored. Attention then moved to the rear of the building to remove a spiral staircase, and replan bedrooms and bathrooms to be more sympathetic with the 1800s aesthetic. What becomes more evident today are the expansive spaces and beautiful interiors. The generous, comfy furniture, tall curtains and palette of richly textured fabrics, together with luxurious lighting features, grant a grandness of scale to each space. The result is a home that is unique to our client’s family where they can leave the day behind to relax and enjoy views of the paddocks, magnificent thoroughbred horses and Hawkesbury River beyond.
